Before cleaning
Identify every surface and consult the current care guidance for that material. If you are unsure about the finish, pause before applying a product. Test advice from an online tutorial against the manufacturer’s instructions.
Dirt, patina, color transfer, glazing damage, and coating cracks are different problems. A cleaning product cannot repair all of them.
A material-specific starting point
| Surface | Routine approach | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Coated canvas | Soft damp cloth; official guidance permits slightly soapy water | Oils, alcohol, perfume, leather lotions, and harsh chemicals. |
| Printed canvas | Be gentle and avoid rubbing printed areas | Abrasion on corners, folds, and decorative print. |
| Natural leather / vachetta | Blot water promptly with a light lint-free cloth | Chemical treatments, oils, and aggressive attempts to erase early stains. |
| Vernis | Keep away from pigment-transferring materials | Denim, magazines, sunlight, and prolonged contact with other leather. |
| Empreinte | Blot surface moisture with an absorbent lint-free cloth | Soap, solvents, heat, greasy products, and abrasive surfaces. |
| Other calfskin/cowhide | Follow the specific finish’s guidance; gentle surface wiping where appropriate | Commercial cleaners and cosmetics contacting the surface. |
Store with shape and airflow
Support the bag lightly without stretching it. Keep straps from pressing hard into the body, and avoid stacking heavy objects on it. Use the protective dust pouch in a dry environment away from heat and direct light.
Do not store a damp bag. Watch for contact between pale surfaces and dark fabrics, colored tissue, or other leather. Rotate frequently used bags to reduce repeated abrasion.
Know when cleaning ends and repair begins
Sticky lining, cracked canvas, loose stitching, separating edge paint, and worn piping call for a repair assessment. Before third-party restoration, document the original condition and ask what will be replaced, recolored, or removed.
Repairs can affect collectibility and future condition comparisons. Retain invoices and disclose replacement parts when describing a bag.
